“It’s the BEST I have ever seen it…”

I have heard this quote about 10x this year and in Arizona, it is surely going to be better than we have seen it in several years.  I don’t dispute it looks good for elk antler (deer as well) in the Southwest and specifically Arizona, but I will dispute the BEST ever claims.   I believe the data doesn’t lie, but our memories sure do.

2005 vs 2015 for the BEST ever title?

My wife was lucky to draw her first elk tag in Arizona in 2005. We saw a ton of bulls over 350 and a couple in the 390+ range and here is her archery elk hunt:

The data doesn’t lie, 2005 still crushed the precipitation totals we have received during the critical antler growth period for 2015.  It’s going to be a great year and we have seen some TIMELY precipitation, but the best ever is still 2005.

I can appreciate your research and concur with the findings. I remember shed hunting when it wasn’t trendy or popular. Comparing ATL images and looking at what is left of my antler collection (kept best over yrs.), I believe without any doubt 2005 was the very best elk antler growth year! The antlers were overall had exceptional mass. The heaviest/biggest antlers in my collection are from the 05 growth yr. The moisture helps ALOT. Not likely to have a repeat shed season like 06 due to reduction of herds and LOTS of lookers. Thanks for sharing weather data research.

Some good points but…… What about June? I’ve lived in AZ my whole life and have never seen a June like this last one that I can remember. Basically the rainfall has moved right into the monsoon and there was no drying out period whatsoever. Maybe it will be a tie!
